It forms part of the coastal defensive system built in the Kingdom of Granada during the time of the Catholic Monarchs to protect the coastline from pirate attacks and other threats from the sea.

Built in the 16th century on a rocky platform near a cliff, this solidly built tower stands in a beautiful setting of hills and sea, very close to Playa de Maro. Historia

La Torre Vigía de Maro se construyó y tenía como objetivo, intentar disminuir el riesgo que sufrían los indefensos labradores y pescadores de la zona. Los piratas encontraban en estas costas un lugar propicio para aprovisionarse de agua, capturar personas y conseguir entrar en el territorio, creando una situación de peligro continuo que ayudaba a desestabilizar una economía ya bastante crítica.

La Torre de Maro, junto a otras torres almenara que conectaban visualmente entre sí, formaba parte de todo un complejo sistema defensivo. Los vigilantes de estas torres comunicaban si se avecinaban naves piratas a las otras torres y poblaciones mediante ahumadas de día y con fuego durante la noche. Este procedimiento de alarma es típico de los musulmanes.

No han sido pocas las ocasiones para comprobar su funcionamiento. Durante el siglo XVIII, se establece una nueva situación en todo el Mediterráneo, donde Inglaterra o Francia son los nuevos enemigos a tener en cuenta.
