Trail description

The Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs trail is one of the most breathtaking experiences on the Nerja coastline. This protected natural area stretches across 12 kilometres of shoreline between Nerja and Almuñécar, offering a dramatic landscape of sheer cliffs, unspoilt coves, and crystal-clear waters.

The path runs along the top of the cliffs, alternating between wide tracks and narrower trails that edge close to the clifftops. The views are constant and spectacular: the deep blue of the Mediterranean contrasts beautifully with the white limestone rock and the lush green of the subtropical vegetation.

Along the way, you can spot coves such as Playa de Maro, Cala del Barranco de Maro, and Cala del Cañuelo, some of which are accessible via side paths that wind down to the sea. The flora includes endemic species, and the marine wildlife is exceptional — dolphins can often be spotted from the clifftop viewpoints.

The area is also home to the famous Cascada de Maro (seasonal), one of the most photogenic waterfalls on the Andalusian coast, which tumbles directly into the sea from the top of the cliff.

Warnings

Some sections run close to the cliff edge and require care. There is little to no shade for most of the route. Not recommended on windy days. Please respect the protected nature reserve and stay on marked paths at all times.

Recommendations

Bring plenty of sun protection and water, as the trail is very exposed to the sun. Wear footwear with good grip for the rocky sections. Binoculars are great for spotting dolphins and seabirds. If you plan to head down to the coves, pack a towel and swimwear.
