Balcón de Europa — Nerja's Iconic Viewpoint

Perched on a rocky promontory high above the Mediterranean, the Balcón de Europa is Nerja's most famous landmark — a sweeping panoramic viewpoint where dramatic cliffs meet turquoise waters.

The Balcón de Europa is Nerja's beating heart and its most recognisable landmark. This spectacular viewpoint sits on a rocky promontory where a Moorish fortress once stood, jutting out over the Mediterranean and offering breathtaking 180-degree panoramas from the Sierra de Almijara mountains to the east all the way along the coast towards Málaga.

King Alfonso XII visited after the devastating earthquake of 1884 and, struck by the views, reportedly declared: "This is the balcony of Europe." The name stuck, and today the promenade is the natural starting point for any visit to Nerja.

What to See

From the viewing platform you can gaze down at hidden coves, crystal-clear waters and the rugged Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs stretching eastward. On clear days the coastline of North Africa is faintly visible on the horizon. Below the balcony on either side lie the charming coves of Calahonda and Caletilla, reachable by short flights of steps.

Historia

To understand the history of the Balcón de Europa, we should know that it was once a 9th-century fortress, situated at the top of a cliff that separates Playa del Salón and Calahonda. On this very spot stood the Castillo Bajo de Nerja, built in the 16th century and remodelled in the 18th to turn it into a cannon battery. Balcon de Europa Nerja Historia The Balcón de Europa has a long history. It was built on a fortress known as the Castillo Bajo de Nerja and was destroyed in 1812 during the Peninsular War. In 1885, King Alfonso XII decided to pay a visit to the town due to a major earthquake it had suffered, which affected part of the provinces of Málaga and Granada. During the Peninsular War, both the Castillo Bajo and La Torrecilla were completely destroyed by the English. King Alfonso XII visited Nerja in 1885, after the earthquake that took place in December of the previous year. During his visit, the king was impressed by the views from the site and exclaimed that he was on the Balcón de Europa. This event has recently been commemorated with the erection of a bronze statue of the king, the work of sculptor Francisco Martín. In the gardens of the Balcón de Europa, there is also a monument that reminds us of the discovery of the Nerja Cave, one of the most important caves in Spain and the world. The urban design of the promenade has undergone several changes throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.
All in all, the Balcón de Europa is a place that combines history, natural beauty and culture, making it a very attractive tourist destination to visit and enjoy its Mediterranean views and historical heritage, which remind us of the area's military past.
