Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs — Protected Natural Park
Discover the Maro-Cerro Gordo Natural Park: 12 kilometres of dramatic coastal cliffs, hidden coves, crystal-clear waters and rich marine life between Nerja and Almuñécar.
The Maro-Cerro Gordo Natural Park (Paraje Natural de los Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo) is one of the most precious protected coastal areas in southern Spain. Stretching 12 kilometres between Nerja and Almuñécar, this narrow strip of towering cliffs, secluded coves and turquoise water is a haven for wildlife and a paradise for anyone who loves unspoilt nature.
Why It's Special
The cliffs rise up to 200 metres above the sea, with watchtowers from the Moorish period still dotting the ridgeline. Below, the coastline is broken by small, often hard-to-reach beaches with some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean. The marine environment is equally impressive: Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows support a rich ecosystem, making the area superb for snorkelling and kayaking.
What to Do
- Hiking: Several trails follow the clifftops with stunning views. The path from Maro to the Cascada de Maro (waterfall) is one of the most popular.
- Beaches: Playa de Maro, Cala del Cañuelo and Cantarriján are all within the park — each with a wild, unspoilt character.
- Kayaking & snorkelling: Guided tours depart from Burriana Beach and Maro Beach, paddling along the cliff base to explore sea caves and the waterfall.
Practical Information
- Access: Free; no entrance fee. Some beaches require a steep walk down.
- Getting there: The cliffs begin just east of Nerja. Maro Beach and Cantarriján are accessible by car (limited parking in summer — arrive early).
