The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias is one of the temples with the most history and devotion in Nerja. Erected in 1720 in Plaza de la Ermita, next to the market, this small Baroque-style gem was funded with the income from the area’s former sugar mill and remains a much-loved spot for locals from Nerja today.

Inside, the image of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias, patron saint of Nerja, a work by the sculptor José Navas Parejo, is venerated. Also notable are the magnificent oil mural paintings that decorate its dome, attributed to the Granada school of the 18th century, an artistic ensemble of great beauty that is striking for its richness in such a small space.

Visiting the Ermita de las Angustias means getting closer to the religious and traditional soul of Nerja. Its setting, next to Plaza de la Ermita, and its intimate atmosphere make it a charming stop for those who want to discover the municipality’s historic heritage.
