Calahonda Beach — Nerja's Most Photographed Cove

Right below the Balcón de Europa, Playa Calahonda is a tiny, photogenic cove with fishing boats, white boathouses and some of the most iconic views in Nerja.

Calahonda Beach (Playa de Calahonda) is one of the most photographed spots in Nerja. Sitting directly below the Balcón de Europa, this small cove combines sparkling clear water with a picture-postcard setting of whitewashed boathouses, colourful fishing boats pulled up on the sand, and dramatic cliff walls rising on either side.

What Makes It Special

It's the views that make Calahonda unmissable: looking back from the beach, the Balcón de Europa towers above you; looking out, the Mediterranean stretches to the horizon. The boathouses (cobertizos) are a charming reminder of Nerja's fishing heritage and add a character that larger beaches lack.

Access

Steps lead down from both sides of the Balcón de Europa — a short but steep descent. There is also a pedestrian tunnel from the Carabeo side. Not accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Facilities

  • A small chiringuito serves drinks and snacks in season.
  • No sunbed hire.
  • The beach is small and gets busy quickly in summer — arrive early or visit in the shoulder season.

Good to Know

Calahonda is at its most magical at sunset, when the warm light catches the cliff face and the boathouses glow. It's also a popular spot for snorkelling around the rocky edges of the cove.
