Snorkelling in Nerja – Crystal-clear waters of Maro

Discover the seabed of the Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs. Full equipment, expert guide and photos included.

Snorkelling in Nerja is one of the must-do summer experiences on the Costa del Sol. The transparent waters of the paraje natural de Maro-Cerro Gordo, protected and of exceptional clarity, make this area one of the best places for snorkelling in all of Andalusia.

Equipped with mask, snorkel and fins, you will discover virgin coves, sea caves and posidonia meadows where salema, sea bream, octopus and, with luck, even a shoal of silvery fish swim. It is a perfect activity for the whole family: you do not need any previous experience and the sea is usually calm in the mornings.

Where can you snorkel in Nerja?

The best areas are the coves of Maro (Maro beach, Cala de las Alberquillas, El Cañuelo) and the rocky shallows beside Burriana beach. The rock walls and cave entrances concentrate most of the marine life.

Best time and sea conditions

To enjoy snorkelling with the best visibility, choose the early hours of the morning, when the westerly wind has not yet whipped up the waves and the water is clearer. The ideal season runs from May to October, with a pleasant water temperature between 19°C and 24°C. Always check the state of the sea and avoid days of strong easterly wind, which reduce visibility.

What should you bring?

Water-resistant sun protection, water to keep hydrated, water shoes if you have them (access to some coves is over rock) and an underwater camera to capture the seabed. If you book a guided route, the snorkelling equipment is usually included.

Tip: combine snorkelling with a kayak or paddle surf route to reach the most inaccessible coves and make the day a complete adventure.
