The Noche de San Juan is the festival that marks the start of summer in Nerja. Every 23rd June, thousands of people gather on the municipality's beaches to celebrate the shortest night of the year with bonfires, music and the tradition of swimming at midnight to purify themselves.
Playa de Burriana, the epicentre of the festival
The main event is held on Playa de Burriana, where the Ayuntamiento organises a programme with live music and the star attraction: the burning of the Júa (a symbolic effigy) at midnight, accompanied by fireworks over the sea.
Municipal regulations
The Ayuntamiento de Nerja sets rules to ensure safety and protect the environment. Bonfires are only allowed on certain beaches (not on Burriana, Torrecilla or Maro), must be made in metal structures and may not contain toxic materials.
