Virgen del Carmen in Nerja

The fiesta of the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of fishermen and sailors, fills Nerja every 16th of July with an emotional maritime procession, floral offerings to the sea and street festivities by the beach.

The fiesta of the Virgen del Carmen is one of the most moving and deeply rooted celebrations in Nerja. Every 16th of July, the municipality honours the patron saint of fishermen and sailors with religious events, a spectacular maritime procession and popular street festivities by the beach.

The maritime procession

The central moment is the procession of the Virgen through the streets of Nerja to the beach, where the image is taken aboard in a maritime procession accompanied by dozens of decorated boats. The fishermen and sailors of Nerja accompany her by sea while, from the shore, hundreds of people throw floral offerings into the water.
