The Romería of San Isidro is one of Nerja’s most beloved celebrations: a festive pilgrimage from Balcón de Europa to the Cuevas de Nerja with horses, carts and music.

The Romería de San Isidro is one of the most popular and well-attended festivals in Nerja. Every 15 May, a local holiday, the municipality celebrates its patron saint with a festive pilgrimage that winds through the streets from Balcón de Europa to the area around the Cuevas de Nerja.

The pilgrimage

The romería starts in the centre of Nerja with horses, decorated carts, music groups and romeros dressed in traditional costumes. The route follows the N-340 to the area around the Cuevas, where the celebration zone is set up with marquees, live performances and popular food.

Food and atmosphere

In the romería grounds, casetas from peñas and associations are set up, serving typical dishes: paella, migas, sardine espetos and traditional sweets. The atmosphere is festive and family-friendly, with live music well into the afternoon.

A special holiday

Historia

Día dedicado a San Isidro, patrón de los agricultores y trabajadores, es un evento colorido y popular en el que verás muchas de las cosas que asociarías con la postal España. Mujeres con vibrantes trajes de flamenca y hombres montando hermosos caballos andaluces vestidos con sus mejores trajes tradicionales y con sombreros cordobeses de bordes anchos están por todas partes, dando a los visitantes la mejor oportunidad del año para ver este espectáculo en la ciudad. El día gira en torno a los agricultores locales dando gracias a San Isidro y pidiendo buena fortuna para el año que viene. Isidoro el obrero fue un hombre nacido en Madrid en 1070, conocido por su compasión hacia los animales y los pobres hasta su muerte a la edad de cincuenta y nueve años. Fue canonizado en 1622 por el Papa Gregorio XV y es una figura celebrada en toda España y en todo el mundo, desde Sudamérica hasta Filipinas. Madrid lo llevó a ser el patrón de las ciudades y cada año reserva el 15 de mayo para honrarlo como lo hacen muchas ciudades, pueblos e islas españolas.
