Cruces de Mayo in Nerja
Día de la Cruz fills Nerja with floral crosses decorated by residents and associations. A contest of creativity and tradition that can be visited on foot.
Every 3 May, Nerja celebrates Día de la Cruz with a deeply rooted tradition in Andalucía: the installation of crosses decorated with flowers, shawls and religious elements in different parts of the municipality.
The crosses competition
Residents, clubs and associations compete to put together the most beautiful cross. Each participant chooses a corner of the town and transforms it with a floral cross surrounded by flowerpots, mantones de Manila, lanterns and other typical Andalusian decorations. The result is a walking route through corners of Nerja that normally go unnoticed.
Where to find the crosses
The crosses are set up in squares, courtyards and corners of the old town. The Concejalía de Tradiciones Populares publishes the locations each year so that residents and visitors can visit them all. It is an excellent opportunity to discover charming spots.
