Semana Santa in Nerja is an intimate and authentic celebration, with processions from three brotherhoods that wind through narrow streets beside the Mediterranean.

Semana Santa in Nerja is one of the most heartfelt celebrations in the municipality. Unlike the large processions in Málaga or Sevilla, those in Nerja stand out for their intimate and close character: the thrones travel through narrow streets where spectators are just a handspan away from the costaleros, with the Mediterranean as a backdrop.

The three brotherhoods

Nerja has three brotherhoods that organise the main processions:

Cofradía del Cautivo y María Santísima de los Desamparados — processes on Holy Wednesday.
Cofradía del Nazareno y María Santísima de la Esperanza — processes on Maundy Thursday.
Cofradía del Santo Entierro y María Santísima de los Dolores — processes on Good Friday.

On Easter Sunday, the Hermandad del Resucitado brings Semana Santa to a close with a more festive morning procession.

Must-see moments

The passage by Balcón de Europa is the most moving moment: the thrones are silhouetted against the sea in a unique setting. Calle Granada and Plaza Cavana are also privileged spots from which to watch the processions.

Local traditions

On Holy Saturday, the children of Nerja take part in the parade of tronillos, hand-made miniature replicas carried through the streets of the centre. It is a heartwarming and very Nerja tradition.

It is a Nerja tradition on Passion Saturday in which children carry handmade miniature replicas of the processional floats. A very touching moment.
