White Villages Near Nerja: 8 Essential Day Trips
The Axarquía region of Málaga is dotted with spectacular white villages less than an hour from Nerja. Discover the 8 best ones for a perfect half-day escape.
One of the great advantages of staying in Nerja is its strategic position as a gateway to the Axarquía, the easternmost district of Málaga. Less than an hour's drive away, dozens of white villages perched in the mountains await you with cobblestone streets, breathtaking viewpoints, and an authenticity that is sometimes lost on the coast.
1. Frigiliana (6 km)
The most famous and the closest to Nerja. Repeatedly awarded as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, its Arab quarter (Barribarto) is a maze of whitewashed alleyways, geranium-filled flowerpots, and mosaics depicting the Moorish revolt of 1569. Don't miss the sugar cane honey, the local star product.
Travel time: 10 min by car, 30 min by bus. Ideal duration: 2-3 hours.
2. Cómpeta (22 km)
Known as the "balcón de la Axarquía", Cómpeta offers stunning views of the sea and the mountains from its elevation of 640 metres. It is famous for its Muscat wine and the Noche del Vino (15th August), one of the most popular festivals in the area. The village has a significant community of British and German residents.
Travel time: 25 min by car. Ideal duration: 2 hours.
3. Sayalonga (19 km)
A small white village with a unique curiosity: its circular cemetery, one of the few in Spain with that shape. The old town retains its Moorish layout and the streets are so narrow that in some places barely one person can pass through. It produces an excellent Muscat wine.
Travel time: 20 min by car. Ideal duration: 1-2 hours.
4. Árchez (23 km)
A tiny village dominated by its Mudéjar minaret, declared a National Monument. It is a 14th-century tower that belonged to the old mosque, now converted into a church. One of the finest examples of Mudéjar art in the province of Málaga.
Travel time: 25 min by car. Ideal duration: 1 hour.
5. Torrox Pueblo (15 km)
Not to be confused with Torrox Costa (the beach and residential area). The original village sits in the mountains and retains a genuine rural charm: a 16th-century church, steep streets, a square with local bars, and a sugar cane honey factory that can be visited. It is less touristy than Frigiliana, which has its own appeal.
Travel time: 15 min by car. Ideal duration: 1-2 hours.
6. Canillas de Albaida (27 km)
A tiny village clinging to the mountainside with vertiginous views. It is the starting point for several hiking routes through the Sierra de Almijara. Its steep streets, 16th-century church, and whitewashed houses make for a perfect picture. It sees almost no tourism, which makes it all the more special.
Travel time: 30 min by car. Ideal duration: 1-2 hours.
7. Salares (30 km)
Another tiny village with a 13th-century Mudéjar minaret, even better preserved than the one in Árchez. With barely 200 inhabitants, it is one of the smallest and most authentic villages in the area. Perfect for those seeking solitude and photography.
Travel time: 35 min by car. Ideal duration: 1 hour.
8. Sedella (32 km)
At the foot of Pico Maroma (2,069 m, the highest peak in the province of Málaga), Sedella is the starting point for the most popular ascent to the rooftop of Málaga. The village itself is a haven of peace with a Renaissance church and terraces where you can enjoy a coffee with views across the entire Axarquía.
Travel time: 35 min by car. Ideal duration: 2-3 hours (if hiking is included).
Tips for the route
- You can combine 2-3 villages in a morning by following the MA-5105 road.
- Fill up your tank before you go: not all villages have a petrol station.
- Many bars are closed on Sundays. The best days to visit are Tuesday to Saturday.
- Park at the entrance to the village: the streets of the old town are impossible to navigate by car.
