Historia

The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations, having been colonised by Phoenicians and Romans in the centuries BC and later by the Arabs in the Middle Ages. During the Arab occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, a fortified castle was built above the town. During the Alpujarras Rebellion of 1568, which spread across much of southern Andalusia, a fierce battle was fought in Frigiliana that ended with the complete destruction of the Arab population. Almost 4,000 Moriscos (Arabs who had been baptised as Christians) unsuccessfully defended the castle against the Spaniards. It is said that some of the Moors threw themselves down rather than be killed or captured by the Spaniards. Afterwards, the castle was demolished stone by stone, and remains of it can still be seen.
Twelve ceramic plaques located on the walls of the old quarter depict the history of the Moriscos of Frigiliana and the events of the final battle.
