El Almendrón
Trail description
The route to El Almendrón is one of the hidden gems of hiking in the Nerja area. This trail takes walkers through a Mediterranean mountain landscape of extraordinary beauty, with panoramic views stretching from the Sierra Almijara all the way to the sea.
The trail begins near the old La Furia and Uno mines, remnants of the area's historic mining activity. About one kilometre past the mines, at the foot of a large pine tree, the path veers left and leads into an increasingly spectacular landscape.
El Almendrón takes its name from the almond trees that dot the scenery, which are especially beautiful when they blossom in January and February. The route follows mountain paths with some moderately challenging sections, but the stunning views make every step worthwhile.
Along the way, you may spot Spanish ibex, eagles and other birds of prey, as well as a rich variety of Mediterranean flora including rosemary, thyme, lavender and several species of wild orchid.
